Are we creating a Lost Generation?
PREMIERES on CBC TV’S “DOC ZONE”
THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2013 AT 9 PM ET/PT
In Canada, the economic recovery has eased for many, but not for young people. The youth unemployment rate is nearly 15% – double that of the general population. But the real crisis is the increasing number of young grads who are underemployed – mired in education debt and struggling to gain a toehold in a workplace being transformed by globalization and automation. Some call them “the lost generation”.
It’s not only young people who will pay the price. If this generation is unable to forge a way into the economy, whose taxes will support the social safety net? If young people can’t afford to buy houses, will the real estate market come crashing down? Youth unemployment and underemployment is a ticking time bomb with serious consequences for everyone.
GENERATION JOBLESS delves into why so many young Canadians are overeducated and underemployed, and looks at innovative solutions here and abroad that are showing positive results.
